Qantas (ASX:QAN) to swoop on JAL services

Company News

There are high expectations that Qantas (ASX:QAN) will move to take advantage of the growing likelihood that a bankrupt Japan Airlines will trim services between Australia and Japan.

Under a restructure plan for JAL, the measures include axing 14 international routes, which might include a reduction of services to Australia.

Fairfax newspapers are quoting Qantas' commercial chief, Rob Gurney as saying, that it was difficult to know if JAL would cut Australia-to-Japan services but stressed that Qantas was in a ''very strong position on the Japanese route with significant competitive advantages".

Qantas recorded a $117 million net profit in 2009.
