Oil and gas producer Origin Energy Ltd
(ASX:ORG) has struck gas at its Rockhopper 1 Exploration well in the Bass Basin, Tasmania.
Hydrocarbon shows were encountered throughout several zones in the main reservoir sequence.
Origin says the type and commercial significance of the hydrocarbon shows recorded to date will be determined after a full suite of wireline logs have been run and wireline pressure and sample data recorded.
The results are encouraging says Innamincka Petroleum who holds a 5% interest in Rockhopper 1.
Origin is operator and holder of 39% of the project, with AWE holding a 47.5% interest and CalEnergy Gas holding an 8.5% interest.
Origin Energy posted a $6.9 billion profit for fiscal 09.
