Top Telco Telstra Corporation Ltd (ASX:TLS) has revealed plans to reduce its carbon emissions by 10 per cent for every dollar earned over the next six years.

According to a report in the Sydney Morning Herald, Telstra hopes to reduce its carbon footprint by up to 15 per cent by 2015.

The Herald reports CEO David Thodey saying the company is setting a realistic and achievable target for carbon intensity because it is serious about reducing its impact on the environment.

The report says Telstra emitted 1.52 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent in 2008/2009 which is equivalent to around 64 tonnes per million dollars of revenue.

Telstra’s new plans require the telecommunications giant to reduce this figure to at least 58 tonnes per million dollars by 2015.

The Herald says in order to achieve this target Telstra will invest in energy efficient projects and accommodation, undertake energy saving projects in existing facilities and decommission redundant assets.

Telstra recorded net profit of $4.073 billion in 2009.
