Australia’s largest company BHP Billiton Limited
(ASX:BHP) has slipped in Fortune Magazine’s annual 500 list of the world’s biggest companies.
The mining giant fell 27 places to rank 142 on the ladder, followed by conglomerate Wesfarmers Limited
(ASX:WES) at 158 and rival supermarket giant at Woolworths Limited
(ASX:WOW) at 161.
On the global tally Australia’s Big Four Banks were ranked 216 for National Australia Bank Limited
(ASX:NAB), 226 for Commonwealth Bank of Australia
(ASX:CBA), 288 for Westpac Banking Corporation
(ASX:WBC) and 352 for ANZ Banking Group
(ASX:ANZ)
Australia’s biggest telco Telstra Corporation Limited
(ASX:TLS) came in 453 on the ladder.
At the top of Fortune 500’s tally US giant retailer Wal-Mart took the prize for the biggest global company, pushing down former number one Royal Dutch Shell.
The top ten biggest companies were dominated by oil producers while newcomers on the list were dominated by Chinese companies.
BHP Billiton reported a net profit of $9.9 billion in the first half of the 2014 financial year.
