Whitehaven Coal Limited
(ASX:WHC) is pleased to announce the official opening of the Maules Creek mine, today, by the Minister for Industry and Science, the Honourable Ian McFarlane. The event was attended by representatives of the Japanese Government, Joint Venture partners in the project - Itochu and J-Power, customers, representatives from local councils, construction companies involved with the project and other stakeholders.
The mine was declared commercial from 1 July this year and is currently operating at 6.0Mtpa ROM coal. It is expected that by the end of CY2015 the mine will have sufficient equipment commissioned to be operating at 8.5Mtpa ROM coal. The high quality coal produced by the mine is being well received by customers in Whitehaven’s premium Asian markets.
The project was constructed some three months ahead of schedule, with first coal loaded onto a train only 359 days after construction commenced.
