Best performing stocks in fiscal 2014

Gold producer Northern Star Resources Limited (ASX:NST) soared to the best performer in the S&P/ASX 200 index over the 2014 financial year. Despite a softer gold price the company was buoyed by new acquisitions and stronger production, boosting its stock 115.4 per cent to $1.26. 

Nickel miner Western Areas Limited (ASX:WSA) was under $2.00 at the beginning of the 2014 calendar year but has jumped 99.1 per cent to $4.62 over the past six months after lifting its annual guidance.  

Pizza maker Domino's Pizza Enterprises Limited (ASX:DMP) rose 96.9 per cent over fiscal 2014 after delivering almost 40 per cent first half profit growth. Mineral explorer Independence Group NL (ASX:IGO) gained 92.5 per cent and takeover target Aquila Resources (ASX:AQA) advanced 89.9 per cent.  

Rounding out the top ten best performers shares in dairy company Bega Cheese Limited (ASX:BGA) added 88.8 per cent and education and child care provider G8 Education (ASX:GEM) added 87 per cent. 

Property investor Aveo Group (ASX:AOG) increased 86.1 per cent, investment company Challenger Limited (ASX:CGF) increased 85.5 per cent and law firm Slater & Gordon (ASX:SGH) increased 85.6 per cent. 

Northern Star Resources reported a net profit of $7.6 million in the first half of the 2014 financial year.
