Telstra fined $10,200 after privacy breach

Company News

Australia’s largest telco Telstra Corporation Limited (ASX:TLS) has been fined $10,200 after breaching the privacy of more than 15,000 customers.

The investigations were undertaken by the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) and the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA).

The organisations report that between February 2012 and May 2013 the information of 15,775 Telstra customers was accessible on the internet.

Telstra has been found to have failed taking reasonable steps to ensure the security or destroy or permanently de-identify the personal information it held.

The telco has since agreed to undertake a number of actions and will be forced to audit its systems by the end of the current financial year.

Telstra Corporation reported a net profit of $1.7 billion in the first half of its 2014 financial year.
