The Star Entertainment Group Limited (ASX: SGR) announced on 29 October 2026 that it has accepted a civil penalty of $260,000,000 following a judgment by the Federal Court of Australia. The Star Entertainment Group operates integrated resort properties, offering gaming, entertainment, and hospitality services across Australia. This substantial penalty relates to historical contraventions of the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing Act 2006 (Cth) by its subsidiaries.

The Federal Court handed down its decision on 28 October 2026, finding against The Star Pty Limited and The Star Entertainment Qld Limited. The $260 million penalty is to be paid in four instalments over a period of 19 months. Chairman Soo Kim, while noting that the current ownership and management team were not involved in the actions leading to the proceedings, commended the work of AUSTRAC and the Federal Court. He affirmed the company’s commitment to fostering a positive relationship with AUSTRAC and demonstrating that The Star now possesses the appropriate leadership, internal culture, and operational processes to prevent similar behaviours. Mr Kim also reiterated that gaming is a public-private partnership, operating by privilege, and supports the public policy objective of eliminating financial crime.

Regarding the financial implications, The Star confirmed that the quantum and payment terms of the penalty constitute a review event under its credit facility agreement with WhiteHawk Capital Partners. However, the company is actively engaging with WhiteHawk and expressed confidence that the facility will remain available. Furthermore, The Star stated that the $260,000,000 penalty awarded is materially in line with the provision recognised in the Group’s 2026 Financial Statements for the AUSTRAC proceedings. The company does not anticipate that the penalty payments, as required by the Federal Court, will impact its ability to continue as a going concern.
