Qantas sends maintenance offshore

Company News

Qantas Airways Limited (ASX:QAN) is sending the maintenance of its Boeing 747 aircraft offshore when it closes its Avalon base in March.

The national carrier has confirmed to media that it will launch a tender process for the maintenance of its fleet of 15 aircraft.

The announcement comes two months after Qantas declared the Avalon facility in Victoria would close, impacting 300 workers.

However, Qantas says it will do its heavy maintenance on the majority of its aircraft in Brisbane.

Qantas says it will engage companies that work for airlines such as Cathay Pacific, United and Delta to carry out maintenance in Hong Kong.

Qantas generated a net profit of $6 million in fiscal 2013.
