BHP seeks $2.3M from mining union

Company News

BHP Billiton Limited (ASX:BHP) is seeking $2.3 million in damages from a mining union and two officials responsible for stoppages at its Queensland operations in February last year.

The Australian says the BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance has launched legal action against the Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union (CMFU) alleging the union contravened sections of the Trade Practices Act.

BHP reportedly believes the union incorrectly directed work to stop at nine of its coalmines that cost BHP $2.392 million.

The paper reports that a spokesperson for the global mining giant has confirmed the legal action is taking place.

BHP Billiton posted a net profit of $22.3 billion in the 2011 financial year.
