Gold miner Newcrest Mining Limited (ASX:NCM) has confirmed that eight of its employees and one of two contractors have died in a helicopter crash in Indonesia.

The helicopter was on its way to Newcrest’s Gosowong gold mine and reported missing yesterday, but discovered early this morning.

Nine passengers deaths have now been confirmed, including two Australians, two South Africans, four Indonesians and one Indonesian crew member, with the other crew member critically injured and in hospital.

Work at the Gosowong mine is understood to have now been suspended pending the arrival of senior Newcrest executives from Australia.

In the first half of its 2011 financial year Newcrest Mining reported a net profit of $466 million.
