BHP Billiton
(ASX:BHP) may be losing as much as $28 million a day because of a strike at a Chilean mine.
More than 2,300 workers have been on strike since Thursday at the Escondida mine, which is the largest copper mine in the world.
The workers are demanding an $11,000 bonus linked to BHP’s earnings to compensate for a drop in their annual production compensation.
Estimates published in media reports say the global miner stands to lose about $US30 million a day during the strikes.
In the first half of its 2011 financial year, BHP Billiton reported a net profit of $10.5 billion.
