Death suspends exports at Rio

Company News

Rio Tinto Limited (ASX:RIO) has suspended exports from one of its three wharves at Dampier Port after a worker was killed on Saturday.

The man, who is believed to be an Irish national working as a contractor for Celtic Scaffolding, was reported missing after the scaffolding he was working on collapsed. Witnesses told Western Australia media that after hearing the scaffolding crash, they saw a hard hat floating in the water.

The world’s second biggest iron ore miner has ceased operations at the port, which is used to load iron ore shipments. The port accounts for about one third of the company’s annual exports.

In the second half of 2010 Rio Tinto Limited (ASX:RIO) reported a profit of $14.9 billion.
