Telstra Corporation Ltd (ASX:TLS) has unveiled plans to tackle bill shock and bad debts from its consumer mobile customers.
He telco says it will slow data speeds when customers exceed their mobile data allowance and not charge for excess domestic data usage, enabling customers who have exceeded data usage to top-up directly from their handsets to resume full-speed data services.
Telstra will also text customers travelling overseas with information on the volume and costs of their data consumption.
Chief financial officer, John Stanhope, says the move is geared towards providing customers with certainty and control over their data usage and preventing large and unexpected bills.
Telstra says the changes are in development and will be launched by the end of 2011.
Telstra generated a net profit of $1.2 billion in the six months to 31 December 2010.
