Telstra switches on 4G network

Company News

Telstra Corporation Ltd (ASX:TLS) says it has become the first Australian telco to extended its wireless network to include 4G technology.

The company’s first 4G base stations have been switched on at stations in Sydney, Perth Melbourne and Brisbane using Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology.

LTE is geared towards providing faster data speeds, high quality video conferencing and faster response times for customers using mobile applications and the internet on the network.

Telstra announced in February that it would upgrade its existing Next G network using LTE technology in the central business districts of all capital cities and selected regional centers by the end of this year.

Executive director of Telstra's Networks and Access Technologies, Mike Wright, says the increased network capacity LTE will provide is vital to support Telstra’s mobile and wireless broadband customers and increased data usage on the Next G network.

In the first half of the 2011 financial year Telstra recorded a net profit of $1.2 billion.
