BHP Billiton eyes LNG interests

Company News

BHP Billiton Ltd’s (ASX:BHP) chief Marius Kloppers has admitted the global miner would be interested in becoming a liquefied natural gas (LNG) operator in the long term.

Speaking to the Australian Financial Review from Beijing, Mr Kloppers said given that the company wants to be in all of the energy sources being an LNG operator would be something useful in due course.

Earlier this month BHP refuted that it was preparing to swoop on Royal Dutch Shell’s unwanted 24 per cent stake in oil and gas producer Woodside Petroleum Ltd (ASX:WPL).

Mr Klopper’s latest comments have not suggested otherwise however, have confirmed that LNG interests are on the company’s radar.

In the six months to 31 December 2010 BHP Billiton recorded a net profit of $10.5 billion.
