ANZ Bank delays class action

Company News

Pre-trial manoeuvring and expected delays from Australia and New Zealand Banking Group (ASX:ANZ) have resulted in a scolding from a Federal Court judge, according to The Australian.

The paper reports that Judge Michelle Gordon has slammed the bank for failing to appropriately facilitate advancing the class action over alleged illegal fees.

ANZ is believed to have claimed that it may take up to two years before the case is ready for trial.

Last year law firm Maurice Blackburn filed the case against ANZ to recover money from penalty fees that were allegedly unlawfully changed by the bank.

In the year to 30 September 2010, ANZ posted a net profit of $4.5 billion.
