BHP raises wages to end strike in SA

BHP Billiton Ltd (ASX:BHP) has increased its wage offer for to end a strike by workers at the Hillside aluminium smelter in South Africa.

The company has raised wages by 8.5 per cent after approximately 600 workers in South Africa’s KwaZulu Natal province downed tools and demanded changes in work conditions.

A spokesman says the employees have asked for a four-year contract with an 8.5 per cent increase in the first year, with the last three years being inflation plus two per cent.

For the year ended 30 June 2010, BHP reported a net profit of $15.26 billion.
