Telstra iPhone battle with rivals

Company News

Telstra (ASX:TLS) may have slashed its fixed broadband prices but its rivals will offer iPhone 4 users far more downloads when the gadget goes on sale in the early hours of Friday morning.

All four telecommunications networks published their prices yesterday with 3, Vodaphone and Optus offering at least five times more monthly data usage than Telstra to users on a $49 per month plan.

Telstra’s delay in embracing Apple’s iPhone is based on the Telco underestimating the device’s popularity and appeal.

The Australian Financial Review reports that Telstra aims to pitch ‘superior network coverage’ to customers may to get them to use Tesltra with the Apple iPhone instead of its rivals.

Each phone network is offering different incentives such as free access to social networking sites or exclusive content.

Whilst the iPhone has received record sales in the US, it has also been plagued by signal problems which may hurt sales here.

Telstra’s 2009 net profit was just above $4 billion and an improvement on the two years before.
