Kentor Gold Limited (ASX:KGL) - Coalition government formed in Kyrgyz Republic

Coalition government formed in Kyrgyz Republic

Kentor Gold Limited (Kentor or the Company) is pleased to advise that a coalition government has been formed in the Kyrgyz Republic (Kyrgyzstan) following the recent successful parliamentary elections.

An agreement on the formation and activity of the coalition parties was signed in the capital Bishkek in the evening of the 30th of November by leaders of the Social Democratic Party, the Republic Party and Ata Meken. The governing coalition holds 67 seats in the 120-seat single chamber parliament. Parliament is scheduled to convene today, the 2nd of December, to endorse the agreement.

The agreement commits the coalition to preserve the unity of the people of Kyrgyzstan and achieve sustainable economic growth as well as the development of social infrastructure. As immediate and urgent action, the agreement also requires efforts of the central and local authorities to be directed towards attracting investment into Kyrgyzstan’s economy and supporting domestic enterprises in order to create new jobs.

The nominated Prime Minister is Almazbek Atambaev, who served as Prime Minister under exiled former President Bakiev before resigning and ultimately condemning President Bakiev’s government for interference in parliamentary elections. Mr Atambaev has also served as Minister for Economic Development, where he gained a reputation for his support of business.

The nominated speaker of the Parliament is Omurbek Tekebaev, who was responsible for the drafting of the new Constitution. A champion of the democratic parliamentary system, Mr Tekebaev is regarded as favouring the building of harmonious relations with the West.

Kentor Managing Director Simon Milroy said: “We congratulate the people of the Kyrgyz Republic for taking this important step in building a stable parliamentary democracy in their country. We are delighted to see a fully legitimate government being formed, a government which promises to be effective in putting the Kyrgyz Republic back on the path of economic development and social stability.”
