Telstra unveils plans for free Wi-Fi hotspots

Company News

Telstra Corporation Limited (ASX:TLS) has unveiled plans for free Wi-Fi at trial locations at payphone sites at some of Australia’s busiest and most iconic places.

The nation’s biggest telco says Australia’s largest Wi-Fi network is a step closer with the first 1,000 trial Wi-Fi hotspots going live before Christmas.

Some of the initial trial Wi-Fi locations will be in Bondi Beach in Sydney and the retail hubs of Bourke Street Mall and Queen Street Mall in Melbourne and Brisbane.

Beyond the trial the company plans to place Telstra-built hotspots at a variety of sites including Telstra retail outlets, exchange buildings and payphone sites.

The news comes after Telstra launched a $100 million Wi-Fi network strategy in May and ahead of the network’s official launch early next year.

Telstra Corporation reported a net profit of $4.34 billion in the 2014 financial year.
