Rio Tinto launches world-first mapping technology

Company News

Rio Tinto Limited (ASX:RIO, LON:RIO) says it is accelerating its productivity drive with world-first technology to enhance mineral recovery.

The global mining company is launching what it describes as a revolutionary three-dimensional mapping technology.

The software aims to precisely identify the size, location and quality of ore in real time by retrieving data from automated trucks and drills operating in mines.

Rio Tinto advises this technology allows it to quickly and easily view, compare and evaluate data to paint a picture of what is under the ground.

Head of innovation John McGagh says it is like an ultrasound image of the deposit delivered in real time which is something the company could never do before.

Rio Tinto reported a net profit of $4.54 billion in the first half of the 2014 calendar year.
