Qantas allows mobile devices to stay on

Company News

Australia’s airlines will now allow travellers to keep their personal electronic devices in flight mode during flights.

Qantas Airways Limited (ASX:QAN) says its customers can today keep their devices such as smart phones, tablets and music players on from gate to gate.

The airline was yesterday approved to revise its personal electronic device policy by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority. The approval comes following new guidance on the safe use of personal electronic devices inflight.

Qantas says devices can now be used whether passengers are boarding via the aerobridge or transiting across tarmac.

However, devices will need to be in flight mode once aircraft doors are closed for departure and travellers will still not be able to make calls or send texts from the air.

Qantas Airways reported a net loss of $235 million in the first half of the 2014 financial year.
