Qantas urges parliament to repeal sales act

Company News

Qantas Airways Limited (ASX:QAN) has issued a statement on its website calling upon Federal Parliament to support the repeal of Section Three of the Qantas Sale Act. The section limits foreign ownership of the airline and disallows the location of significant maintenance and support facilities outside the country.

The statement also said the carbon tax was a significant issue for the airline. Qantas said it paid $106 million of carbon tax in Fiscal 2013 and $59 million in the first half of Fiscal 2014, which it was not able to recoup through sales.

Qantas reaffirmed its commitment to $2 billion in savings over the next three years which will include up to 5000 job losses or offshore relocations. Redundancies are reportedly to begin within weeks. In the first half of the 2014 financial year, Qantas reported a net loss of $235 million.
