Melbourne, Australia: Neuren Pharmaceuticals (ASX: NEU) today announced that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted Orphan Drug Designation to Neuren’s investigational drug, NNZ-2591, for the treatment of neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). Neuren Pharmaceuticals develops new drug therapies to treat multiple serious neurological disorders caused by genetic abnormalities or brain injury, that have no or limited approved treatment options. HIE is a potentially devastating type of brain injury caused when a baby’s brain does not receive enough oxygen or blood flow before or shortly after birth, leading to significant neurodevelopmental disabilities and mortality.
Orphan Drug Designation is a special status awarded by the FDA for drugs targeting rare conditions that affect fewer than 200,000 patients in the United States. This designation provides substantial incentives for the drug’s sponsor, including seven years of marketing exclusivity upon approval and a waiver of the prescription drug user fee for a marketing application. Neuren CEO Jon Pilcher expressed satisfaction with this important commercial milestone, stating, “We now look forward to discussing the development path with the FDA and preparing the IND application for a clinical study in HIE, a devastating condition with serious need.”
Neuren is currently conducting a juvenile animal safety study, which is required by the FDA before initiating a clinical study in HIE. The company plans to submit an Investigational New Drug (IND) application in the first half of 2027. NNZ-2591 is also in clinical development for other neurodevelopmental disorders, including Phelan-McDermid syndrome, Pitt Hopkins syndrome, and Angelman syndrome, all of which have previously received Orphan Drug Designation. This latest designation for HIE further underscores the potential of NNZ-2591 in addressing serious neurological conditions with high unmet medical needs.
