Anthropic, the Silicon Valley giant behind the popular Claude AI model, is poised for a landmark Nasdaq offering next month, with its initial public offering (IPO) expected to raise a record-setting $US100 billion. This listing presents a significant litmus test for the artificial intelligence sector. CommSec, the nation’s largest retail stockbroker, will market Anthropic to Australian investors, joining smaller online brokers already promoting this major global IPO. Anthropic develops sophisticated AI models, aiming to reshape the global economy despite high costs and intense competition.

The impending offering comes amid mixed sentiment within the AI investment landscape. While concerns exist about enormous spending on AI infrastructure, evidenced by Firmus Technologies pulling its planned $44 billion ASX listing, fund managers broadly support Anthropic’s prospects. Its prospectus showed losses ballooning to $US80.7 billion ($114 billion) in the first half, yet revenue surged over 1300 per cent to $US16.3 billion. Michael Frazis, chief investment officer at Frazis Capital Partners, believes the “worst of this AI sell-off is behind us,” adding this “blockbuster result could turn sentiment in semiconductors.”

Anthropic is anticipated to command a market capitalisation between $US1.5 trillion and $US2 trillion upon listing, a significant increase from $US183 billion a year ago. Local private assets manager BFA Global Investors holds an Anthropic stake valued around $US40 million, with CIO Gavin Ezekowitz highlighting future profitability. Australian institutions are involved, including Commonwealth Bank with a $3 billion stake, and Macquarie Capital as an underwriter. Online brokers like IG Australia and Pepperstone are actively facilitating retail investor access. Cameron Gleeson, head of investment strategy at Betashares, advised investors against over-concentration in the AI trade, despite the IPO’s historic nature.
