Australian Fund Stays Bullish on AI Amid Market Jitters

Loftus Peak, an Australian investment firm specialising in global disruptive technologies, continues to back its significant exposure to artificial intelligence (AI) stocks despite recent market pressures. Its chief investment officer, Alex Pollak, oversees the $1.6 billion Global Disruption Fund, which targets companies driving significant change across sectors like artificial intelligence, life sciences, and e-commerce. The fund boasts a strong track record, returning 20.8 per cent annually since its November 2016 inception, underpinned by early investments in companies such as Nvidia, Tesla, and Netflix.

Pollak attributes the recent downturn in semiconductor stocks, which saw the Philadelphia Stock Exchange Semiconductor Index suffer its longest losing streak since 2008, to a “sentiment sell-off” rather than fundamental issues. He maintains that the current AI revolution is driven by an exponential “usage boom,” akin to the iPhone’s adoption, differentiating it from the dotcom era’s speculative financing. Loftus Peak has strategically avoided exposure to leveraged “neocloud” data centre operators, such as Australia’s Firmus Technologies, which Pollak views as high-risk plays, citing Firmus’s pulled IPO and distress signals in US rival CoreWeave’s bonds.

The fund’s conviction extends beyond AI infrastructure, with significant positions in medical and life science stocks. Pollak highlights that advancements in processing power are accelerating drug development, leading to improved outcomes, such as the increase in five-year cancer survival rates. Eli Lilly, a key holding, reflects this conviction through its successful weight-loss and diabetes treatments. While some market segments, like subscription entertainment services Netflix and Spotify, have seen declines over fears of AI-driven cancellations, Pollak considers these largely “knee-jerk” reactions, asserting these companies do not rely on hindering customer cancellations. Loftus Peak aims to manage $2 billion by year-end, reflecting its sustained growth and a disciplined investment philosophy.
