Novo Nordisk CEO Mike Doustdar has urged employees to embrace a stronger customer focus as the Danish pharmaceutical giant endeavours to reclaim its leading position in the burgeoning global obesity drug market. Novo Nordisk produces a range of pharmaceutical products, including treatments for diabetes and obesity, notably its popular weight-loss medication, Wegovy. This strategic push comes amidst investor scrutiny regarding Doustdar’s capacity to restore Novo Nordisk’s momentum, particularly as competitor Eli Lilly gains significant ground in a market analysts predict could exceed $100 billion annually by 2030.

Novo Nordisk was an early leader in the weight-loss drug sector, having launched Wegovy in the United States in 2021. However, the company has since seen its lead diminish, with Eli Lilly swiftly moving to sell its rival treatment, Zepbound, directly to consumers. Doustdar addressed these challenges during a globally broadcast town hall meeting at the company’s headquarters near Copenhagen, attended by media representatives.

The chief executive, who assumed leadership in August last year, recently unveiled a comprehensive new cultural strategy dubbed “The Novo Way.” This initiative also includes plans to modify the company’s day-to-day name and logo. Doustdar articulated four core principles guiding this transformation: customer obsession, competitiveness, clarity, and care and integrity. He emphasised the ambition to become “a better and a bigger company, a company that does more for many more, both patients and consumers.” The company is scheduled to engage with investors at an upcoming capital markets day on Monday.
