Globe Metals & Mining Limited (ASX: GBE) has announced a significant development for its Kanyika Niobium Project in Malawi, with the formal withdrawal of long-running legal proceedings by members of the Kanyika community. Globe, an Australian-based resources company, is focused on developing the Kanyika Niobium Project, aiming to become a key producer of niobium for high-strength alloys. A Notice of Withdrawal and Discontinuance was filed in the High Court of Malawi, confirming the claimants’ decision to withdraw all claims against Globe Metals & Mining (Africa) Limited and the Attorney General of Malawi.
Interim CEO & CFO, Charles Altshuler, described the withdrawal as a very positive step, concluding a longstanding legal matter and enhancing certainty for the project’s development. He highlighted that community support for the withdrawal demonstrates a shared desire for the Kanyika Project to progress and its benefits to be realised. The proceedings, initiated in August 2017 by 243 community members, arose from historical exploration activities and preparatory work undertaken from around 2007. Globe had maintained that affected individuals were compensated for temporary access during exploration, and resettlement planning did not create immediate payment obligations prior to project approvals.
This resolution also settles a contingent liability disclosed in the company’s 2025 Annual Report, estimated at MWK700-800 million (approximately A$603,000-A$690,000). With this historical claim now concluded, Globe’s immediate focus shifts to completing the current compensation and resettlement programme, a separate process, and securing access to land for planned mining and development. The company expects compensation under this current programme to be paid in September 2026, with a separate update planned for shareholders.
