Environmental Clean Technologies Limited (ASX: ECT), an Australian company developing advanced materials and clean technology solutions, has announced a significant development in its MXene strategy. The company’s acquisition target, Xenica Inc., has secured a sublicense from MXene Inc., granting it rights to produce, use, or sell MXenes for military and defence applications. This agreement provides a crucial market-access component for ECT’s Flash Joule Heating (FJH)-produced MXenes.
This sublicense integrates a key element into ECT’s comprehensive MXene strategy, which includes the proposed acquisition of Xenica – holding an exclusive Rice University licence for FJH MXene production – alongside access to Metallium Ltd’s Gator Point FJH reactor and initial US-sourced MAX Phase precursor. MXene Inc. maintains an exclusive military-use licence from Drexel University. The defence sector represents a substantial opportunity, with demand for high-quality, Western-produced MXenes currently outpacing supply. US Executive Order 14415 further supports domestic sourcing for defence, benefiting US-produced MXenes. Initial applications span EMI shielding, infrared camouflage, thermal management, and radar absorption.
MXenes, two-dimensional advanced materials with unique electrical conductivity and tuneable surface chemistry, offer significant potential. However, their high production cost via conventional, multi-day methods has limited commercialisation. ECT’s FJH technology aims to offer a rapid, low-waste alternative. Executive Chairman Faldi Ismail stated this agreement completes a critical market-access component, bringing together synthesis technology, a US reactor, precursor supply, and defence market rights. The company’s immediate focus is on demonstrating repeatable production at Gator Point, independent material characterisation, and progressing customer qualification. Revenue remains subject to the Xenica acquisition’s completion, successful scale-up, and customer qualification processes.
