A Swiss industry initiative developing a Swiss franc-denominated stablecoin has officially entered its live testing phase, Swiss bank UBS announced on Tuesday. The project has also welcomed financial market operator SIX and payment application TWINT as new partners. A Swiss industry initiative is developing a Swiss franc-denominated stablecoin. This project aims to test the potential uses of such a digital currency in Switzerland’s financial sector, exploring its integration into the broader digital money ecosystem.

The ongoing tests are centred around CHFD, a Swiss franc stablecoin that has been technically live within a sandbox environment since late June. This digital asset is meticulously designed to maintain a precise 1:1 peg to the traditional Swiss franc, ensuring stability for users. The overarching scheme seeks to generate critical insights essential for the ongoing development of the Swiss digital money ecosystem, ultimately aiming to strengthen the overall competitiveness of Switzerland’s esteemed financial centre on a global scale.

This collaborative effort initially saw UBS, PostFinance, Sygnum, Raiffeisen, ZKB, and BCV join forces in April to explore potential applications for a franc-pegged stablecoin across Switzerland. This push comes as financial institutions globally grapple with the rapid expansion of the stablecoin industry and the broader growth of cryptocurrencies. Stablecoins, defined as a type of cryptocurrency engineered to maintain a constant value by being backed by traditional currencies, are increasingly viewed by some lenders as potential competitors, thus prompting them to explore and implement blockchain technology within their own business models.
