This atypical environment features extreme sector volatility and rapid leadership changes. Real estate plummeted over 11 per cent in March, then rebounded 9 per cent in April; consumer staples showed similar reversals. Even major sectors like banks have experienced monthly performance swings. Technology, after eight months near the bottom, recently surged almost 17 per cent. Such negative correlation between monthly sector rankings underscores profound instability, where market leadership rarely endures.
Jun Bei Liu, founder and lead portfolio manager at Ten Cap, an investment management firm, links this market restlessness to unusually high macroeconomic uncertainty. Fluctuating inflation, geopolitical tensions, trade war shifts, evolving AI narratives, and whipsawing RBA cash rate expectations contribute to a volatile landscape. Unexpected tax changes and global long-bond yield fears further complicate the outlook, creating violent price swings and fostering investor short-termism.
Despite the temptation to chase fleeting trends, Ten Cap emphasises a disciplined, fundamentals-based approach. A longer investment horizon allows short-term noise to dissipate, letting underlying company values reassert themselves. This strategy accepts temporary underperformance due to macro noise; ultimately, a steadfast commitment to fundamentals provides the strongest edge in navigating such a turbulent market.
