Air NZ (ASX:AIZ) and Singapore Airlines have agreed to form an alliance.

The airlines say the deal will allow Air New Zealand to fly the Auckland to Singapore route again and Singapore Airlines to fly the Airbus A380 to New Zealand for the first time.

Air NZ and Singapore Airlines are aiming to boost capacity on the route by up to 30 per cent.

The deal is subject to regulatory approval from the Competition Commission of Singapore and the New Zealand Minister of Transport.

If approval is granted, flights may commence as early as December.

Air NZ generated a net profit of $153.3 million in fiscal 2013.
