Fortescue Metals spruiks its safety culture

Company News

Fortescue Metals Group Limited (ASX:FMG) has spruiked its safety culture in the wake of the latest fatality at its West Australian operations.

The iron ore miner has also welcomed comments from the Western Australian Department of Mines and Petroleum following published comments in the media after the incident.

Fortescue advises its talks with the department about safety culture were in a different context and related to certain smaller mining contractors.

The company also says the department clarified statements made by people who claimed they were victimised when raising safety concerns did not relate specifically to Fortescue.

Fortescue says safety is one of the company’s core values and it actively encourages staff to raise any safety concerns and will thoroughly investigate the latest incident and determine what needs to be done to ensure it never occurs again.

Fortescue Metals Group reported a net profit of $1.9 billion in the 2013 financial year.
