ALS Limited (ASX:ALQ) has generated an interim net profit of $97.7 million, down 28 per cent on the previous corresponding period.

The laboratory analysis group saw earnings drop in the September half amid challenging geochemical and coal services markets, however net profit was within the guidance range.

The company says it produced a sound financial result in challenging conditions against the backdrop of weak commodity prices and cost cutting by clients.

In the December quarter, the net profit is expected to be flat at $47 million, but the company says the fourth quarter is difficult to forecast.

An interim dividend of 19 cents per share was announced.
