Optus warns of bill-shock

Company News

Singapore Telecommunications Limited (ASX:SGT) Singtel-owned Optus says there will be bill-shock as more customers take up 4G services.

Optus chief executive Kevin Russell says the telco industry should tackle the problem or risk repeating the mistake of over-charging for international roaming services.

Large telcos including Telstra, Optus and Vodafone are banking on more and more customers switching to 4G networks to boost their revenues as growth in mobile subscriber numbers dwindles.

The Optus boss believes the key to winning the 4G race is to give data-hungry customers certainty over how much they will pay for their data usage.

He says telcos need to put in place a plan that encourages customers to use their smart phones as much as they want.

Singtel generated a net profit of $2.7 billion in fiscal 2013.
