Origin to pay for LNG project

Company News

Origin Energy Limited (ASX:ORG) managing director Grant King says the company's balance sheet is strong enough to fund its share of the huge Australian Pacific LNG project, according to media reports.

But Mr King reportedly says his assurances rely on cost estimates from 2012.

The comments came amid reports of investor fears that a cost blow out could force the energy retailer, which owns 35 per cent of the $24 billion project, into a dilutive equity raising.

Origin booked a $1.65 billion cost increase at AP LNG in February after a review of the project conducted in the last three months of 2012.

Mr King told media he remains confident AP LNG will begin shipments in mid-2015.

Origin Energy generated a net profit of $561 million in the first half of the 2013 financial year.
