Qantas tie up faces continued union scrutiny

Company News

Various union representatives fronted an Australian Competition and Consumer Commission conference on Friday, appealing the tie up between Qantas Airways Limited (ASX:QAN) and Emirates.

According to various media reports, the ACCC concluded that further investigation into the potential impact of the partnership did not warrant the resources.

National Secretary of the Transport Workers Union (TWU) Tony Sheldon says the unions are calling for government intervention in the form of a national inquiry into the partnership.

Mr Sheldon says a national inquiry into the future of the Australian aviation industry should address the national interest and not just a narrow interpretation of what constitutes a competitive environment.

Qantas reported a $244 million loss in the 2012 financial year.
