BHP Billiton Limited
(ASX:BHP) has been found guilty by a Perth Magistrate of failing to protect the safety of a worker who died in a Pilbara workshop in 2008.
According to various media reports, a Perth Court has found the global miner failed to provide instruction and supervision or enforce a suitable job hazard assessment for Andrew McLaughlin, who was crushed by a scissor lift in a workplace incident.
BHP now faces a maximum penalty of $400 thousand for the offence, with sentencing scheduled for March 19.
BHP says it remains committed to improving safety performance across its business, however withheld further comment pending a reflection on the legal aspects of the decision.
BHP Billiton generated a $15.2 billion net profit in fiscal 2012.
