BHP coal miners set to strike

Company News

BHP Billiton Limited (ASX:BHP) will face industrial action today at two of its coalmines in the NSW Illawarra region.

Over 80 workers will reportedly hold stop-work meetings and refuse to work overtime due to a pay dispute.

Unions say five months of negotiations have left the issue unresolved.

BHP’s subsidiary Illawarra Coal says workers were receiving competitive packages.

Mine supervisors maintain they are underpaid relative to NSW standards. The mines which operate 24hours a day, seven days a week, service BlueScope Steel Limited (ASX:BSL) and Arrium Limited (ASX:ARI).

BHP generated net profit of $15.2 billion in fiscal 2012.
