Qantas seeks Asian ally

Company News

Qantas Airways Limited (ASX:QAN) is reportedly set to reveal more details about its strategy for a push into Asia in coming weeks.

According to Fairfax reports, Australia’s largest carrier will centre its tactics on better timing of flights to Hong Kong and Singapore, an opportunity made available via its impending deal with Emirates.

Qantas needs to find itself an ally in Asia in order to seize a share of the worlds fastest growing travel market, with a lack of suitable partners viewed as a significant hurdle to its plans.

The airline has an existing code share agreement with China Eastern- the third largest Chinese airline- which is also Qantas’ partner in Jetstar Hong Kong.

CEO Alan Joyce believes the imminent Hong Kong venture will strengthen relations with China Easters, which is also reported to be eager to boost Australian flights in 2013.

Qantas Airways booked a net loss of $244 million in the 2012 financial year.
