News Limited sheds regional jobs

News Corporation’s (ASX:NWS) Australian arm News Limited is reportedly shedding editorial production jobs, as it outsources production on nine regional newspapers.

According to media reports, the publications affected include; The Mercury in Hobart, The Cairns Post and the Gold Coast Bulletin.

A spokesperson for the company says the changes come amid a transformation program that began in July and includes outsourcing various jobs and a $60 million investment into a new publishing system.

The media company would not confirm how many jobs would be impacted, however union officials estimate about 60 positions would be lost. 
 
In the 2012 financial year, News Corporation generated a net profit of $1.3 billion.
