BHP Billiton Limited
(ASX:BHP) is reportedly planning to use automated and remote technology at its newest iron ore mine in the Pilbara region of WA.
According to News Corporation, a fleet of between 12 and 15 automated Caterpillar trucks would operate at its Jimblebar mine from late next year.
The global miner will consider similar facilities for its coal operations in Queensland and its copper mine in Chile.
Rival Rio Tinto Limited
(ASX:RIO) has implemented 10 automated trucks at its Junction South East mine and plans to expand its fleet to 150 over the next four years with plans to install driverless trains.
BHP Billiton posted an annual net profit of $15.24 billion in the 2012 financial year.
