Alcoa workers riot over job losses

Company News

Hundreds of Alcoa (ASX:AAI) workers from its Italian plant have reportedly taken to the streets in Rome in a heated protest over the planned closure of a Sardinian factory.

Protestors demanded the Italian government intervene to save their jobs.

The government issued a statement that said it would approach Swiss industrial group Klesch and Glencore to start talks on a possible takeover.

The US based aluminium giant saw a $US2 million net loss in its second quarter results which were impacted by a drop in aluminium prices.

In the first half of the 2012 financial year Alcoa posted a net profit of $691.9 million.
