Qantas Airways Limited’s
(ASX:QAN) chief Alan Joyce has pleaded the case for a second airport in Sydney and says Australia’s largest airline is a big supporter of the proposal.
My Joyce believes Australia’s largest city, Sydney, needs a second airport and has called for urgent action to ensure the continued economic development of Sydney, New South Wales and Australia.
The comments come after debate surfaced following the release of a government report last month warning that planes would be turned away from Sydney if a second facility was not built by 2030.
The report, commissioned by both the New South Wales and Federal governments, identified Wilton as a preferred location for the second airport but the state’s premier Barry O'Farrell favors a second facility in Canberra.
In the first half of its 2012 financial year Qantas reported a net profit of $42 million.
