Virgin Australia Holdings Limited (ASX:VAH) will introduce carbon pricing surcharges in response to carbon pricing schemes in Australia and the European Union.
Australia's carbon tax will come into effect from the July 1, 2012 this year with a starting price of $23 per tonne of carbon.
Virgin's surcharges for domestic Australian flights will range between $1.50 and $6.00, depending on the distance travelled, and will come into effect from March 1, 2012.
The EU Emissions Trading Scheme became effective at the beginning of this year and requires airlines to pay a carbon price by purchasing "carbon credits".
Consequently Virgin advises that from the March 1, 2012 there will be a surcharge of $US3.00 per passenger for all Virgin codeshare flights into and out of Europe.
In the first half of the 2012 financial year Virgin Australia generated a net profit of $51.8 million.
