BHP H1 production up 23%

BHP Billiton Limited (ASX:BHP, LON:BLT, NYSE:BHP) says its first-half production jumped 23 per cent, and it’s expecting to mine record tonnages of iron ore this year.
 
The miner produced 41,072 million tonnes of iron ore in the three months to December, increasing rates by four per cent on the September quarter.
 
Copper production was down 16 per cent though; lead down nine per cent, silver down 15 per cent and zinc down 33 per cent.
 
The miner has also reported an almost 700 per cent increase in its mineral resource tonnage at its Spence copper mine in Chile. BHP says total oxide resource at the mine is 64 million tonnes.
 
BHP reported a net profit of $22.3 billion in the 2011 financial year.
