Origin to buy $30m carbon credits

Company News

Origin Energy Limited (ASX:ORG) is expected to buy $30 million of carbon credits from plantation projects. That’s according to the Australian Financial Review.

It would be the first deal of its kind since the Senate passed the carbon tax this week.

The deal would see Carbon Conscious plant 10 million trees next year, offsetting a small amount of greenhouse gases generated by the oil and gas group.

Origin has $163 million of options to buy carbon offset credits under the agreement.

Origin Energy reported a net profit of $248 million for the 2011 financial year.
