Qantas Airways Limited (ASX:QAN) has announced further delays with 7,000 passengers having their travel plans disrupted today.

So far, 17 flights have been cancelled and a further 32 are delayed. Qantas says the situation is “getting worse, not better”.

Yesterday the airline announced the grounding of five planes, today they prepare for further flight disruptions as engineers get ready to walk off the job. The airline estimates that 60,000 passengers have been affected since strike action began months ago.

Meanwhile, chief executive Alan Joyce says he would welcome government intervention to resolve the battle with unions.

Qantas reported a net profit of $249 million for the 2011 financial year.
