WA Premier spruiks Woodside gas hub

Company News

Western Australia's premier, Colin Barnett, has spruiked Woodside Petroleum Limited’s (ASX:WPL) proposed $30 billion liquefied natural gas hub in Western Australia.

Amid continuing controversy stemming from environmental concerns, Mr Barnett yesterday told ABC Radio that the project will bring economic opportunities and jobs for the region.

Despite protestors making their objection known outside the ABC studio Mr Barnett insisted that any adverse outcomes from the project would be maintained at an “absolute minimum”.

A major environmental review of the project is due at the end of 2011 and a final investment decision is expected by mid 2012.

In the first half of its 2011 financial year Woodside’s net profit declined 8 per cent to $772 million.
